τοῦ δʼ Ἀριστοτέλους τεθαύμακα, ὃν πολυθρύλητον πεποιήκασιν οἱ σοφοὶ οὗτοι, καλέ μου Δημόκριτε, (καὶ σὺ τῶν λόγων αὐτοῦ πρεσβεύεις ὡς καὶ τῶν ἄλλων φιλοσόφων τε καὶ ῥητόρων τῆς ἀκριβείας) πότε μαθὼν παρὰ τίνος ἀνελθόντος ἐκ τοῦ βυθοῦ Πρωτέως Νηρέως, τί ποιοῦσιν οἱ ἰχθύες πῶς κοιμῶνται πῶς διαιτῶνται. τοιαῦτα γὰρ συνέγραψεν ὡς εἶναι κατὰ τὸν κωμῳδιοποιὸν θαύματα μωροῖς. φησὶν γὰρ ὅτι κήρυκες μὲν καὶ πάντα τὰ ὀστρακόδερμα ἀνόχευτον αὐτῶν ἐστι τὸ γένος καὶ ὅτι πορφύρα καὶ κῆρυξ μακρόβια. ζῆν γὰρ τὴν πορφύραν ἔτη ἓξ πόθεν τοῦτο οἶδε· καὶ ὅτι ἐπὶ πλεῖστον χρόνον ἐν ὀχείᾳ γίγνεται ἔχιδνα, καὶ ὅτι μέγιστον μέν ἐστιν φάττα, δεύτερον δὲ οἰνάς, ἐλάχιστον δὲ τρυγών. πόθεν δʼ ὅτι μὲν ἄρρην ἵππος ζῇ ἔτη πέντε καὶ τριάκοντα, δὲ θήλεια πλείω τῶν τεσσαράκοντα, βιῶσαι φήσας τινὰ καὶ ἑβδομήκοντα πέντε. ἱστορεῖ δʼ ὅτι καὶ ἐκ τῆς τῶν φθειρῶν ὀχείας αἱ κόνιδες γεννῶνται καὶ ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ σκώληκος μεταβάλλοντος γίνεται κάμπη, ἐξ ἧς βομβυλιός, ἀφʼ οὗ νεκύδαλλος ὀνομαζόμενος· ἀλλὰ μὴν καὶ τὰς μελίσσας βιοῦν φησι μέχρι ἐτῶν ἕξ, τινὰς δὲ καὶ ἑπτά. οὐκ ὦφθαι δέ φησιν οὔτε μέλισσαν οὔτε κηφῆνα ὀχεύοντας, ὅθεν οὐκ εἶναι διιδεῖν πότερα αὐτῶν ἄρρενα θήλεα. πόθεν δʼ ὅτι οἱ ἄνθρωποι ἥσσονες μελισσῶν· αἰεὶ γὰρ αὗται τὴν ἰσότητα τοῦ βίου τηροῦσιν, οὐ μεταβαλλόμεναι, ἀλλʼ ἀγείρουσαι καὶ ἀδιδάκτως ποιοῦσαι. οἱ δʼ ἄνθρωποι ἥσσονες μελισσῶν καὶ πλήρεις οἰήσεως ὡς ἐκεῖναι μέλιτος· πόθεν δʼ ἐτήρησεν; ἐν δὲ τῷ περὶ μακροβιότητός φησιν ὅτι ὦπταί τις μυῖα ἔτη ἓξ ἑπτὰ ζήσασα. τίς γὰρ τούτων ἀπόδειξις;

CTS URN Retriever

The CTS URN retriever is a tool for retrieving and citing paragraphs, passages, and words in the text of the Deipnosophists by typing the corresponding CTS URN. The Digital Athenaeus is providing the text of the Teubner edition of the Deipnosophists by Georg Kaibel (1887-1890), which is cataloged as perseus-grc2 in the Perseus Catalog.

The syntax of the URNs follows the specification of the CITE Architecture.

For example:

The tool allows also users to type only book and paragraph of the Deipnosophists and get the corresponding CTS URN.

For example:

Correspondences between Casaubon and Kaibel references are available through the Casaubon-Kaibel Reference Converter.

The icons on the left of each paragraph are links to external resources:

Using CTS URNs, it is possible to export citations of the Deipnosophists down to the word level. By selecting a portion of text holding down the ALT-key, users get a pop-up window with the CTS URN that identifies the selected chunk of text.
