Book 7

Paragraph
55

Ἀντιφάνης δʼ ἐν Λύκωνι κωμῳδῶν τοὺς Αἰγυπτίους φησίν· τά τʼ ἄλλα δεινούς φασι τοὺς Αἰγυπτίους εἶναι τὸ νομίσαι τʼ ἰσόθεον τὴν ἔγχελυν· πολὺ τῶν θεῶν γάρ ἐστι τιμιωτέρα. τῶν μὲν γὰρ εὐξαμένοισιν ἔσθʼ ἡμῖν τυχεῖν, τούτων δὲ δραχμὰς τοὐλάχιστον δώδεκα πλέον ἀναλώσασιν ὀσφρέσθαι μόνον· οὕτως ἔσθʼ ἅγιον παντελῶς τὸ θηρίον. Ἀναξανδρίδης δʼ ἐν Πόλεσι πρὸς τοὺς Αἰγυπτίους ἀποτεινόμενος τὸν λόγον φησίν· οὐκ ἂν δυναίμην συμμαχεῖν ὑμῖν ἐγώ· οὔθʼ οἱ τρόποι γὰρ ὁμονοοῦσʼ οὔθʼ οἱ νόμοι ἡμῶν, ἀπʼ ἀλλήλων δὲ διέχουσιν πολύ. βοῦν προσκυνεῖς, ἐγὼ δὲ θύω τοῖς θεοῖς· τὴν ἔγχελυν μέγιστον ἡγεῖ δαίμονα, ἡμεῖς δὲ τῶν ὄψων μέγιστον παρὰ πολύ· οὐκ ἐσθίεις ὕειʼ, ἐγὼ δέ γʼ ἥδομαι μάλιστα τούτοις· κύνα σέβεις, τύπτω δʼ ἐγώ, τοὔψον κατεσθίουσαν ἡνίκʼ ἂν λάβω. τοὺς ἱερέας ἐνθάδε μὲν ὁλοκλήρους νόμος εἶναι, παρʼ ὑμῖν δʼ, ὡς ἔοικʼ, ἀπηργμένους. τὸν αἰέλουρον κακὸν ἔχοντʼ ἐὰν ἴδῃς κλαίεις, ἐγὼ δʼ ἥδιστʼ ἀποκτείνας δέρω. δύναται παρʼ ὑμῖν μυγαλῆ, παρʼ ἐμοὶ δέ γʼ οὔ. Τιμοκλῆς δʼ ἐν Αἰγυπτίοις· πῶς ἂν μὲν οὖν σώσειεν ἶβις κύων; ὅπου γὰρ εἰς τοὺς ὁμολογουμένους θεοὺς ἀσεβοῦντες οὐ διδόασιν εὐθέως δίκην, τίνʼ αἰελούρου βωμὸς ἐπιτρίψειεν ἄν;

CTS URN Retriever

The CTS URN retriever is a tool for retrieving and citing paragraphs, passages, and words in the text of the Deipnosophists by typing the corresponding CTS URN. The Digital Athenaeus is providing the text of the Teubner edition of the Deipnosophists by Georg Kaibel (1887-1890), which is cataloged as perseus-grc2 in the Perseus Catalog.

The syntax of the URNs follows the specification of the CITE Architecture.

For example:

The tool allows also users to type only book and paragraph of the Deipnosophists and get the corresponding CTS URN.

For example:

Correspondences between Casaubon and Kaibel references are available through the Casaubon-Kaibel Reference Converter.

The icons on the left of each paragraph are links to external resources:

Using CTS URNs, it is possible to export citations of the Deipnosophists down to the word level. By selecting a portion of text holding down the ALT-key, users get a pop-up window with the CTS URN that identifies the selected chunk of text.
