Τίμαιος δʼ Ταυρομενίτης ἐκλαθόμενος αὑτοῦ ἐλέγχει δʼ αὐτὸν εἰς τοῦτο Πολύβιος Μεγαλοπολίτης διὰ τῆς δωδεκάτης τῶν ἱστοριῶν οὐκ εἶναι ἔφη σύνηθες τοῖς Ἕλλησι δούλους κτᾶσθαι, αὐτὸς εἰπὼν Ἐπιτίμαιος (οὕτως δʼ αὐτὸν καλεῖ Ἴστρος Καλλιμάχειος ἐν ταῖς πρὸς αὐτὸν ἀντιγραφαῖς) εἰπὼν γὰρ ὅτι Μνάσων Φωκεὺς πλείους ἐκέκτητο δούλους τῶν χιλίων· κἀν τῇ τρίτῃ δὲ τῶν ἱστοριῶν Ἐπιτίμαιος ἔφη οὕτως εὐδαιμονῆσαι τὴν Κορινθίων πόλιν ὡς κτήσασθαι δούλων μυριάδας ἓξ καὶ τεσσαράκοντα· διʼ ἃς ἡγοῦμαι καὶ τὴν Πυθίαν αὐτοὺς κεκληκέναι χοινικομέτρας. Κτησικλῆς δʼ ἐν τρίτῃ Χρονικῶν κατὰ τὴν ἑπτακαιδεκάτην πρὸς ταῖς ἑκατόν φησιν ὀλυμπιάδα Ἀθήνησιν ἐξετασμὸν γενέσθαι ὑπὸ Δημητρίου τοῦ Φαληρέως τῶν κατοικούντων τὴν Ἀττικὴν καὶ εὑρεθῆναι Ἀθηναίους μὲν δισμυρίους πρὸς τοῖς χιλίοις, μετοίκους δὲ μυρίους, οἰκετῶν δὲ μυριάδας μʹ. Νικίας δʼ Νικηράτου, ὡς καλὸς ἔφη Ξενοφῶν ἐν τῷ περὶ πόρων, χιλίους ἔχων οἰκέτας ἐμίσθωσεν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὰ ἀργυρεῖα Σωσίᾳ τῷ Θρᾳκὶ ἐφʼ ὀβολὸν ἑκάστου τελεῖν τῆς ἡμέρας. Ἀριστοτέλης δʼ ἐν Αἰγινητῶν πολιτείᾳ καὶ παρὰ τούτοις φησὶ γενέσθαι ἑπτὰ καὶ τεσσαράκοντα μυριάδας δούλων. Ἀγαθαρχίδης δʼ Κνίδιος ἐν τῇ ὀγδόῃ καὶ τριακοστῇ τῶν Εὐρωπιακῶν Δαρδανεῖς φησι δούλους κεκτῆσθαι τὸν μὲν χιλίους, ... τὸν δὲ καὶ πλείους· τούτων δʼ ἕκαστον ἐν μὲν εἰρήνῃ γεωργεῖν, ἐν πολέμῳ δὲ λοχίζεσθαι ἡγεμόνα νέμοντας τὸν ἴδιον δεσπότην.

The Digital Athenaeus is providing the text of the Teubner edition of the Deipnosophists by Georg Kaibel (1887-1890), which is cataloged as perseus-grc2 in the Perseus Catalog.

The syntax of the URNs follows the specification of the CITE Architecture.

Using CTS URNs, it is possible to export citations of the Deipnosophists down to the word level. By selecting a portion of text holding down the ALT-key, users get a pop-up window with the CTS URN that identifies the selected chunk of text.
