ταῦτα τοῦ Οὐλπιανοῦ εἰπόντος ἐπιμαρτυρῶν Λαρήνσιος καὶ συγκατατιθέμενος τῷ λόγῳ ἔφη τὸν Μάριον τῶν ζῴων τούτων δορὰς εἰς τὴν Ῥώμην ἀναπεπομφέναι, ἃς μηδένα εἰκάσαι δεδυνῆσθαι τίνος εἰσὶ διὰ τὸ παράδοξον τῆς ὄψεως· ἀνατεθεῖσθαί τε τὰς δορὰς ταύτας ἐν τῷ τοῦ Ἡρακλέους ἱερῷ, ἐν οἱ τοὺς θριάμβους κατάγοντες στρατηγοὶ ἑστιῶσι τοὺς πολίτας, καθάπερ πολλοὶ τῶν ἡμεδαπῶν ποιηταὶ καὶ συγγραφεῖς εἰρήκασιν· ὑμεῖς οὖν, γραμματικοί, κατὰ τὸν Βαβυλώνιον Ἡρόδικον, μηδὲν τῶν τοιούτων ἱστοροῦντες, φεύγετʼ, Ἀριστάρχειοι, ἐπʼ εὐρέα νῶτα θαλάττης Ἑλλάδα, τῆς ξουθῆς δειλότεροι κεμάδος, γωνιοβόμβυκες, μονοσύλλαβοι, οἷσι μέμηλε τὸ σφὶν καὶ σφῶιν καὶ τὸ μὶν ἠδὲ τὸ νίν. τοῦθʼ ὑμῖν εἴη δυσπέμφελον· Ἡροδίκῳ δὲ Ἑλλὰς ἀεὶ μίμνοι καὶ θεόπαις Βαβυλών. κατὰ γὰρ τὸν κωμῳδιοποιὸν Ἀναξανδρίδην· ἡδονὴν ἔχει, ὅταν τις εὕρῃ καινὸν ἐνθύμημά τι, δηλοῦν ἅπασιν· οἱ δʼ ἑαυτοῖσιν σοφοὶ πρῶτον μὲν οὐκ ἔχουσι τῆς τέχνης κριτήν, εἶτα φθονοῦνται. χρὴ γὰρ εἰς ὄχλον φέρειν ἅπανθʼ ὅσʼ ἄν τις καινότητʼ ἔχειν δοκῇ. ἐπὶ τούτοις τοῖς λόγοις ἀναχωροῦντες οἱ πολλοὶ λεληθότως διέλυσαν τὴν συνουσίαν.

The Digital Athenaeus is providing the text of the Teubner edition of the Deipnosophists by Georg Kaibel (1887-1890), which is cataloged as perseus-grc2 in the Perseus Catalog.

The syntax of the URNs follows the specification of the CITE Architecture.

Using CTS URNs, it is possible to export citations of the Deipnosophists down to the word level. By selecting a portion of text holding down the ALT-key, users get a pop-up window with the CTS URN that identifies the selected chunk of text.
