δὲ Ἡρακλῆς πλείστας δόξας ἐσχηκέναι γυναῖκας (ἦν γὰρ φιλογύνης) ἀνὰ μέρος αὐτὰς εἶχεν, ὡς ἂν στρατευόμενος καὶ κατὰ διάφορα γιγνόμενος χωρία· ἐξ ὧν καὶ τὸ τῶν τέκνων αὐτῷ πλῆθος ἐγένετο. ἐν ἑπτὰ μέντοι γε ἡμέραις πεντήκοντα διεπαρθένευσε Θεστίου κόρας, ὡς Ἡρόδωρος ἱστορεῖ πολυγύναιος δʼ ἐγένετο καὶ Αἰγεύς· πρώτην μὲν γὰρ ἔγημε τὴν Ὅπλητος θυγατέρα, μεθʼ ἣν τῶν Χαλκώδοντος μίαν. παραδοὺς δʼ ἀμφοτέρας φίλοις συνῆν πολλαῖς χωρὶς γάμων. ἔπειτα τὴν Πιτθέως ἔλαβεν Αἴθραν, μεθʼ ἣν Μήδειαν. Θησεὺς δὲ Ἑλένην ἁρπάσας ἑξῆς καὶ Ἀριάδνην ἥρπασεν. Ἴστρος γοῦν ἐν τῇ τεσσαρεσκαιδεκάτῃ τῶν Ἀττικῶν καταλέγων τὰς τοῦ Θησέως γενομένας γυναῖκάς φησιν τὰς μὲν αὐτῶν ἐξ ἔρωτος γεγενῆσθαι, τὰς δʼ ἐξ ἁρπαγῆς, ἄλλας δʼ ἐκ νομίμων γάμων· ἐξ ἁρπαγῆς μὲν Ἑλένην, Ἀριάδνην, Ἱππολύτην καὶ τὰς Κερκύονος καὶ Σίνιδος θυγατέρας, νομίμως δʼ αὐτὸν γῆμαι Μελίβοιαν τὴν Αἴαντος μητέρα. Ἡσίοδος δέ φησιν καὶ Ἵππην καὶ Αἴγλην, διʼ ἣν καὶ τοὺς πρὸς Ἀριάδνην ὅρκους παρέβη, ὥς φησι Κέρκωψ. Φερεκύδης δὲ προστίθησι καὶ Φερέβοιαν. πρὸ δὲ τῆς Ἑλένης καὶ ἐκ Τροιζῆνος ἥρπασεν Ἀναξώ. μετὰ δὲ τὴν Ἱππολύτην Φαίδραν ἔσχεν.

The Digital Athenaeus is providing the text of the Teubner edition of the Deipnosophists by Georg Kaibel (1887-1890), which is cataloged as perseus-grc2 in the Perseus Catalog.

The syntax of the URNs follows the specification of the CITE Architecture.

Using CTS URNs, it is possible to export citations of the Deipnosophists down to the word level. By selecting a portion of text holding down the ALT-key, users get a pop-up window with the CTS URN that identifies the selected chunk of text.
