ΚΑΝΘΑΡΟΣ. ὅτι μὲν πλοίου ὄνομα κοινόν, ὅτι δὲ καὶ ποτήριόν τι οὕτω καλεῖται Ἀμειψίας ἐν Ἀποκοτταβίζουσί φησι· Μανία, φέρʼ ὀξύβαφα καὶ κανθάρους. Ἄλεξις δʼ ἐν Κρατείᾳ δὲ λόγος περί τινος ἐν καπηλείῳ πίνοντος εἶθʼ ὁρῶ τὸν Ἑρμαίσκον τῶν ἁδρῶν τούτων τινὰ κάνθαρον καταστρέφοντα, πλησίον δὲ κείμενον στρωματέα τε καὶ γύλιον αὐτοῦ. Εὔβουλος δʼ ἐν Παμφίλῳ πολλάκις μεμνημένος τοῦ ὀνόματός φησιν· ἐγὼ δὲ (καὶ γὰρ ἔτυχεν ὂν καταντικρὺ τῆς οἰκίας καινὸν καπηλεῖον μέγα) ἐνταῦθʼ ἐπετήρουν τὴν τροφὸν τῆς παρθένου, κεράσαι κελεύσας τὸν κάπηλόν μοι χόα ὀβολοῦ παραθεῖναί θʼ ὡς μέγιστον κάνθαρον. καὶ πάλιν· δὲ κάνθαρος πάλαι δὴ καινὸς ὡς ξηραίνεται. καὶ ἔτι· ἅμα δὲ λαβοῦσʼ ἠφάνικε πηλίκον τινὰ οἴεσθε μέγεθος ἀρεσιαν μέγαν πάνυ, καὶ ξηρὸν ἐπόησʼ εὐθέως τὸν κάνθαρον. Ξέναρχος δʼ ἐν Πριάπῳ φησὶ τάδε· σὺ δὲ μηκέτʼ ἔγχει, παιδάριον, εἰς ἀργυροῦν, εἰς τὸ βαθὺ δʼ ἐπανάγωμεν· εἰς τὸν κάνθαρον, παιδάριον, ἔγχει, νὴ Δίʼ εἰς τὸν κάνθαρον. Ἐπιγένης Ἡρωίνῃ· ἀλλʼ οὐδὲ κεραμεύουσι νῦν τοὺς κανθάρους, τάλαν, ἐκείνους τοὺς ἁδρούς, ταπεινὰ δὲ καὶ γλαφυρὰ πάντες .... ὡσπερεὶ αὐτὰ τὰ ποτήριʼ, οὐ τὸν οἶνον πιόμενοι.

CTS URN Retriever

The Digital Athenaeus is providing the text of the Teubner edition of the Deipnosophists by Georg Kaibel (1887-1890), which is cataloged as perseus-grc2 in the Perseus Catalog.

The syntax of the URNs follows the specification of the CITE Architecture.

Using CTS URNs, it is possible to export citations of the Deipnosophists down to the word level. By selecting a portion of text holding down the ALT-key, users get a pop-up window with the CTS URN that identifies the selected chunk of text.
