οἶδα δέ τινας, ἄνδρες θιασῶται, καὶ μέγα φρονήσαντας οὐχ οὕτως ἐπὶ πλούτῳ ὡς ἐπὶ τῷ κεκτῆσθαι πολλὰ ἐκπώματα ἀργυρᾶ τε καὶ χρυσᾶ. ὧν εἷς ἐστι καὶ Πυθέας Ἀρκὰς ἐκ Φιαλείας, ὃς καὶ ἀποθνῄσκων οὐκ ὤκνησεν ὑποθέσθαι τοῖς οἰκείοις ἐπιγράψαι αὐτοῦ τῷ μνήματι τάδε· Πυθέα μνῆμα τόδʼ ἔστʼ, ἀγαθοῦ καὶ σώφρονος ἀνδρός, ὃς κυλίκων ἔσχεν πλῆθος ἀπειρέσιον ἀργυρέων χρυσοῦ τε καὶ ἠλέκτροιο φαεινοῦ, τῶν προτέρων πάντων πλείονα πασάμενος. τοῦτο δʼ ἱστορεῖ Ἁρμόδιος Λεπρεάτης ἐν τῷ περὶ τῶν κατὰ Φιγάλειαν Νομίμων Ξενοφῶν δʼ ἐν ὀγδόῳ Παιδείας περὶ Περσῶν λέγων γράφει καὶ ταῦτα· καὶ μὴν ἐκπώματα ἢν μὲν ὡς πλεῖστα ἔχωσιν, τούτῳ καλλωπίζονται· ἢν δʼ ἐξ ἀδίκων φανερῶς μεμηχανημένα, οὐδὲν τούτῳ αἰσχύνονται. πολὺ γὰρ ηὔξηται ἐν αὐτοῖς ἀδικία τε καὶ αἰσχροκέρδεια. δὲ Οἰδίπους διʼ ἐκπώματα τοῖς υἱοῖς κατηράσατο, ὡς τὴν κυκλικὴν Θηβαίδα πεποιηκώς φησιν, ὅτι αὐτῷ παρέθηκαν ἔκπωμα ἀπηγορεύκει, λέγων οὕτως· αὐτὰρ διογενὴς ἥρως ξανθὸς Πολυνείκης πρῶτα μὲν Οἰδιπόδῃ καλὴν παρέθηκε τράπεζαν ἀργυρέην Κάδμοιο θεόφρονος· αὐτὰρ ἔπειτα χρύσεον ἔμπλησεν καλὸν δέπας ἡδέος οἴνου. αὐτὰρ γʼ ὡς φράσθη παρακείμενα πατρὸς ἑοῖο τιμήεντα γέρα, μέγα οἳ κακὸν ἔμπεσε θυμῷ, αἶψα δὲ παισὶν ἑοῖσι μετʼ ἀμφοτέροισιν ἐπαρὰς ἀργαλέας ἠρᾶτο (θεῶν δʼ οὐ λάνθανʼ Ἐρινύν), ὡς οὔ οἱ πατρώιʼ ἐνηέι ἐν φιλότητι δάσσαιντʼ, ἀμφοτέροισι δʼ αἰεὶ πόλεμοί τε μάχαι τε ...

CTS URN Retriever

The CTS URN retriever is a tool for retrieving and citing paragraphs, passages, and words in the text of the Deipnosophists by typing the corresponding CTS URN. The Digital Athenaeus is providing the text of the Teubner edition of the Deipnosophists by Georg Kaibel (1887-1890), which is cataloged as perseus-grc2 in the Perseus Catalog.

The syntax of the URNs follows the specification of the CITE Architecture.

Using CTS URNs, it is possible to export citations of the Deipnosophists down to the word level. By selecting a portion of text holding down the ALT-key, users get a pop-up window with the CTS URN that identifies the selected chunk of text.
