οὐκ ἐμέθυον δʼ οἱ πάλαι, ἀλλὰ καὶ Πιττακὸς Περιάνδρῳ τῷ Κορινθίῳ παρῄνει μὴ μεθύσκεσθαι μηδὲ κωμάζειν, ἵνʼ, ἔφη, μὴ γνωσθῇς οἷος ὢν τυγχάνεις, ἀλλʼ οὐχ οἷος προσποιῇ. κάτοπτρον (γὰρ) εἴδους χαλκός ἐστʼ, οἶνος δὲ νοῦ διὸ καὶ καλῶς οἱ παροιμιαζόμενοι λέγουσι τὸν οἶνον οὐκ ἔχειν πηδάλια. Ξενοφῶν γοῦν Γρύλου παρὰ Διονυσίῳ ποτὲ τῷ Σικελιώτῃ πίνειν ἀναγκάζοντος τοῦ οἰνοχόου προσαγορεύσας ὀνομαστὶ τὸν τύραννον τί δή, ἔφη, Διονύσιε, οὐχὶ καὶ ὀψοποιὸς ἀγαθὸς ὢν καὶ ποικίλος ἀναγκάζει ἡμᾶς εὐωχουμένους ἐσθίειν καὶ μὴ βουλομένους, ἀλλὰ κοσμίως ἡμῖν παρατίθησι τὴν τράπεζαν σιγῶν; καὶ Σοφοκλῆς δὲ ἐν σατυρικῷ φησιν ὡς ἄρα τὸ πρὸς βίαν πίνειν ἴσον κακὸν πέφυκε τῷ διψῆν βίᾳ. ὅθεν εἴρηται καὶ τὸ οἶνος ἄνωγε γέροντα καὶ οὐκ ἐθέλοντα χορεύειν. Σθένελός τε ποιητὴς οὐ κακῶς εἴρηκεν· οἶνος καὶ φρονέοντας ἐς ἀφροσύνας ἀναβάλλει. δὲ Φωκυλίδης ἔφη· χρὴ δʼ ἐν συμποσίῳ κυλίκων περινισομενάων ἡδέα κωτίλλοντα καθήμενον οἰνοποτάζειν. ἔτι δὲ καὶ νῦν τοῦτο παραμένει παρʼ ἐνίοις τῶν Ἑλλήνων. ἐπεὶ δὲ τρυφᾶν ἤρξαντο καὶ χλιδῶσι, κατερρύησαν ἀπὸ τῶν δίφρων ἐπὶ τὰς κλίνας καὶ λαβόντες σύμμαχον τὴν ἀνάπαυσιν καὶ ῥᾳστώνην ἀνειμένως ἤδη καὶ ἀτάκτως ἐχρῶντο τῇ μέθῃ, ὁδηγούσης οἶμαι τῆς παρασκευῆς εἰς τὰς ἡδονάς.

The Digital Athenaeus is providing the text of the Teubner edition of the Deipnosophists by Georg Kaibel (1887-1890), which is cataloged as perseus-grc2 in the Perseus Catalog.

The syntax of the URNs follows the specification of the CITE Architecture.
