ὅρος οἰκουμένης. δῆμον τὴν Ῥώμην φησί. λέγει δὲ καὶ ὅτι οὐκ ἄν τις σκοποῦ πόρρω τοξεύων λέγοι τὴν Ῥώμην πόλιν ἐπιτομὴν τῆς οἰκουμένης· ἐν συνιδεῖν ἔστιν οὕτως πάσας τὰς πόλεις ἱδρυμένας, καὶ κατʼ ἰδίαν δὲ τὰς πολλάς, ὡς Ἀλεξανδρέων μὲν τὴν χρυσῆν, Ἀντιοχέων δὲ τὴν καλήν, Νικομηδέων δὲ τὴν περικαλλῆ, προσέτι τε τὴν λαμπροτάτην πόλεων πασῶν ὁπόσας Ζεὺς ἀναφαίνει, τὰς Ἀθήνας λέγω. ἐπιλείποι δʼ ἄν με οὐχ ἡμέρα μία ἐξαριθμούμενον τὰς ἐν τῇ Ῥωμαίων οὐρανοπόλει Ῥώμῃ ἀριθμουμένας πόλεις, ἀλλὰ πᾶσαι αἱ κατὰ τὸν ἐνιαυτὸν ἀριθμούμεναι διὰ τὸ πλῆθος. καὶ γὰρ ὅλα ἔθνη ἀθρόως αὐτόθι συνῴκισται, ὡς τὸ Καππαδοκῶν καὶ Σκυθῶν καὶ Ποντίων καὶ ἄλλων πλειόνων. οὗτοι οὖν πάντες, σύμπας δῆμος τῆς οἰκουμένης, τὸν ἐφʼ ἡμῖν, φησί, φιλόσοφον ὀρχηστὴν Μέμφιν ἐκάλεσαν ἀπαρχαίζοντες τὴν διὰ τοῦ σώματος αὐτοῦ κίνησιν τῇ τῶν πόλεων ἀρχαιοτάτῃ καὶ βασιλικωτάτῃ, περὶ ἧς Βακχυλίδης φησί· τὴν ἀχείμαντόν τε Μέμφιν καὶ δονακώδεα Νεῖλον. οὗτος τὴν Πυθαγόρειον φιλοσοφίαν ἐπιδείκνυσιν ἥτις ἐστί, μετὰ σιωπῆς πάνθʼ ἡμῖν ἐμφανίζων σαφέστερον οἱ τὰς τῶν λόγων τέχνας ἐπαγγελλόμενοι διδάσκειν.

The Digital Athenaeus is providing the text of the Teubner edition of the Deipnosophists by Georg Kaibel (1887-1890), which is cataloged as perseus-grc2 in the Perseus Catalog.

The syntax of the URNs follows the specification of the CITE Architecture.
